Current

Private practice in Boulder and Denver where Dr. Jowdy specializes in sport psychology, psychological/medical conditions and personal growth.  He is on faculty as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University Of Colorado Hospital Denver School Of Medicine – www.cusportsmedicine.org.  And he consults with intercollegiate athletic departments and in the area of business and industry.  Dr. Jowdy also consults with Lorraine Moeller, winner of the bronze medal in the 1992 Olympic Games in the marathon, educating coaches in the Lydiard Method of training – www.lydiardfoundation.org.

 

Past Work Experience

Dr. Jowdy has worked for the U.S. Olympic Committee on two separate occasions.  He served as the team psychologist for U.S. Speed Skating and helped both the long and short track teams prepare for the Olympics.  As a result of his working with Apolo Anton Ohno, he is featured in Apolo’s autobiography, Zero Regrets.  While at Denver Health Medical Center he served as co-director of an intensive outpatient program that focused on the treatment of people with a dual diagnosis – a substance abuse disorder and mental illness.  And he served as the Department Head of the Exercise/Sport Psychology program at Argosy University/Phoenix.  Please see his resume for a more extensive background.  In the area of sport, he was the assistant coach of Penn State’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team and coached tennis at the high school level.

 

Educational Background

Stanford Medical School (postdoctoral training), Denver Health Medical Center (clinical internship), Virginia Commonwealth University (M.S. and Ph.D. in counseling psychology with a specialization in sport psychology), Pennsylvania State University (M.S. in exercise science with a specialization in sport psychology) and State University of New York at Cortland (B.S. in both psychology and exercise science).  Dr. Jowdy also draws upon his education obtained through the University of Life where he continues to be a full-time student.

 

Professional Experiences

Dr. Jowdy has presented at national conferences, for example, the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and the American Psychological Association.  He has published book chapters in Advances in Sport Psychology and Exploring Sport and Exercise Psychology along with having scientific research published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology and the Journal of Counseling Psychology.


Membership

Dr. Jowdy is member of The Caring Clergy Project, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the American Psychological Association Division 47 (Exercise and Sport Psychology), and the Worldwide Who’s Who.
