Sport & Performance Psychology Services

Sport Psychology

Sport psychology services are designed to use psychological skills to enhance the quality of training and performance in competition. My goal is to teach athletes how to become psychologically skilled, just as they would be physically skilled. I have seen many athletes learn to perform “beyond his/her expectations” and this is what I would like to see for you. This area of my practice is also designed to help coaches and parents of athletes.

Below are examples of some situations I will address when working with an athlete, coach and/or parent.

  • work with the athlete and coach to identify a training program to improve some but not limited to the following areas:
    • improve motivation – off-season, during the season, with weight training, etc.
    • improve ability to relax and control anxiety
    • improve confidence in general and within specific aspects of the sport, i.e. shooting free throws, running the 100m, playing against a certain opponent
    • learn to control perfectionism and being compulsive to decrease the risk of added pressure and overtraining that will lead to injury
    • help the athlete learn to enjoy his/her sport when the fun may have been lost
    • learn the power that self-limiting beliefs can have on performance and how to change them
    • help the athlete learn the connection between setting goals and the belief factor
    • teach athletes how to perform “beyond their expectations”
  • work with parents to teach them to effectively communicate to enhance performance
  • help athletes with injury and to cope constructively with the healing process
  • work with teams to help them learn how to optimize their performance
  • ideally, help athletes learn how sport psychology can help in all areas of life

SPORT PSYCHOLOGY RESOURCES

Performance Psychology

Performance Psychology is similar to sport psychology but applied to participants other than athletes. We are all performers in one way or another and seek to enhance our performance. The artist, musician, dancer, writer, business woman, marketing consultant or people starting a business are all individuals looking for “the edge” to make a difference in their performance. And we know that that edge can be found by training for the psychological aspects of performance, regardless of the performance demand.

The work is similar to that done with athletes and coaches; however, the clientele include the following:

  • artists (i.e., painters, writers, photographers – to improve creativity, transcending “writer’s block,” believing art can be your livelihood)
  • musicians (i.e, to facilitate the learning process in beginning students or helping the more highly skilled prepare for recitals/major events)
  • dancers (i.e., learning how to build and maintain confidence, use visualization training, perform under pressure and heal from eating disorders)
  • actors/actresses (i.e., help learn to play different roles, increase comfort with an audience, improve the quality of time in the studio)
  • the business professional (i.e., improve productivity, manage stress, handle conflict, set goals, balancing work and family life)
